Dear Editor,
I have noted with great concern, the number of animals that are allowed to stray on our roadways, particularly the herds of cattle and the numerous donkeys and horses.
Our laws do not allow this, so why should our law enforcement officers allow it. Have there not been enough deaths that were directly caused by animals on the roads?
Why are the owners so insensitive to the threat to lives because of their carefree attitude in allowing their animals to roam heedlessly on our roads?
I guess if no one will stop me from parking my vehicle across the road and I feel like doing it I will do it – so why are the powers that be allowing animals to occupy our roads and cause lives to be lost? I guess these powers that be are themselves insensitive to the loss of lives on the roads.
The question now is why are these insensitive people still in places of authority?
I live in Berbice so I will focus on the roads in Berbice, but this article certainly speaks for other parts of the country where the same thing is happening.
Every day there can be found at least a dozen cattle on the roads in New Amsterdam. These very cattle bed down at nights under the Town Hall and the filth and stench that are found there remind one of a ‘cow pen’, and for the years that I have been practicing law in New Amsterdam I have not heard the mayor comment on this disgrace even once.
In fact I knew the name of the mayor on the morning of May 26, 2009 when I attended the flag raising ceremony at State House. Before and since then I have not seen nor heard of the mayor.
This same mayor also allows store owners to erect fences in front of their business places and block side walks. The town of New Amsterdam is a dismal place and it looks like the pasture this mayor and the Minister of Home Affairs are making it. Remove the cattle and other animals from the roads, or remove yourself from your high offices.
I will suggest that to rid the roads of stray animals the job can be contracted out and people can be delegated with the responsibility of impounding strays – owners will be given two weeks to take their animals home, or the prisoners get fed with good meat.
That should not be too tough to handle. Here is a better offer, let’s work out the logistics and I will take on the responsibility.
In conclusion Mr. Mayor and Minister there will always be people ready to do the job you can’t do, but you are the ones in authority so do your job.
