ROSE HALL TOWN, CORENTYNE – As the police in Division ‘B’ of the Guyana Police Force continue the probe into the $6 million robbery committed at the Rose Hall Town Post Office on Friday, the Post Mistress and the Postal Apprentice were both released from the Whim Police Station on station bail on Monday.
They had been detained ever since the robbery.
The cash stolen was said to have gone to pay pensioners. The money arrived at the Rose Hall Post Office, from New Amsterdam about 12:15 hours the said Friday.
According to reports from the Guyana Police Force, the woman was held after information received suggested that the currency was never placed in a safe but kept under her desk. But she refuted those allegations.
About 14:25 hours on Friday the Post Mistress attached to the Rose Hall Office, 40-year old Chandrawattie Sukdeo, of Lot 4 Reliance in East Canje, along with Postal Apprentice 21-year old Javon Arthur, of Lot 22 ‘A’ Mattai Street, Rose Hall Town were in the post office.
A well-groomed stranger entered and enquired from the Post Mistress about stamps. The woman reportedly asked him to wait and turned away to tend to something on her desk. Police reports indicate that the Chandrawattie Sukdeo then heard a sound. This was when she noticed that the stranger had already opened the door and had entered the section reserved for staff only.
She reportedly chided him for being in that section but he continued to advance toward her.
Within seconds, the man allegedly pounced on her and pushed her against a safe by her desk. Sukdeo, according to reports, was screaming as the drama played out.
As this was taking place, the Postal Apprentice who had heard the commotion, was making his way to investigate and at that point a second bandit appeared.
The robber who had first entered the office then managed to snatch the bag containing the $6 million from under a desk.
The thieves made their way out and ran north up the street. A security guard attached to the Rose Hall Constabulary was making his way to the scene. The bandits intercepted him and ordered him to lie on the roadway while they brandished a firearm. He complied and the robbers continued their bid for freedom, discharging two rounds in the process.
No one was injured. Immediately after the incident police detained the two members of staff.
The Rose Hall Post Office is situated in the building that houses the municipal market, which is beneath the office of the Interim Management Committee and opposite the Constabulary Department.
