Guyana’s lone female swimmer at the FINA World championships, Noelle Smith finally got into competitive mode on Day 5 of competition.
Smith, who became only the second female to have represented Guyana at this most prestigious competition, having been preceded by Asanti Mickle (Barcelona 2003), competed in the 100m Freestyle, in which she was placed in the third of 17 heats with a seed time of 1:08.38.
Smith was able to pull herself up one position from 10th to finish 9th in the heat with a time of 1:07.07. It appeared that the young swimmer encountered similar difficulties with her swimsuit, as had been experienced by the boys. Head coach, Nicholas Fraser commented: “Noelle took to the pool today (yesterday) in her first event (100m Freestyle), She was placed in Lane 9 of Heat 3 with an entry time of 1:08.38, which she did in December in the 50m Marlins Swim Pool in Trinidad and Tobago. She used the Bleseventy suit.
She was slow getting off the blocks but her pullout was well done and she looked like she had gotten into a good rhythm from the start. She was able to do 32.45 in the first 50m as we had planned the night before, but was not able to get off the wall and return with the same intensity (swimming 34.64 in the second 50m). She indicated that the suit had filled up with water after the first 15m.”
Today, Smith, Fabian Binns and Niall Roberts will all be in action. Smith will take part in the 50m Butterfly, Binns the 50m Freestyle, while Roberts competes in both the 50m Free and 100m Butterfly, the last events of the championships for both Binns and Roberts.
