An exquisite and unforgettable evening of dance is slated for August 8 at the National Cultural Centre when the Guyana Hindu Dharmic Sabha stages Naya Zamana 15 – Dancing through the Ages.
Naya Zamana 15, choreographed by artistic directors, Dr. Vindhya Vasini Persaud and Trishala Persaud, has over the years presented a refreshing, eclectic melting pot of energetic, passionate, soulful, whimsical and subversive dance styles. For the 15th production, the two sisters are working with some 70 dancers, and have created snapshot vignettes from the various eras of dance.
From Odissi, Kuchipudi and Kathak, to folk and Bollywood, the duo vows to delight patrons.
The producers say that this year’s production is more an explosion of talent, but will be a celebration of free expression and originality made richer by the energy and enthusiasm of the dedicated group of trained dancers who have put their heart and soul into making Naya Zamana 15 memorable.
The gripping intensity of mood dances will take patrons through a whirlwind of emotion while the fusion of rhythms and cultures will create fast paced, high energy vibrations that will permeate the Cultural Centre in the two hour performance which begins at 20:00 hours.
Imaginative and opulent sets by Andrew Juman, of Andrew Arts, will lend a classy timelessness to the sensational silhouettes and movements of dancers while vibrant colours will vie for supremacy in the costumes designed by Trishala Persaud.
Naya Zamana 15 brings together the combined energies and talent of dancers who have returned home for the performance, joined the troupe with new enthusiasm, traveled and performed in the USA, Canada, Trinidad, Barbados, St. Lucia, CARIFESTA and many national events in a performance which will effortlessly take the audience on an exciting journey of discovery, reminiscence, nostalgia and fast track to the present. Senior dancers who will perform in Naya Zamana 15 include choreographers Vindhya and Trishala Persaud, Gina Arjoon, who has been with Naya Zamana for all of its 15 years, Zahrah Alli, Vana Singh, Alana Seebarran, all of whom started in the production as child dancers, and more recent but equally talented additions to the group like Roshini Boodhoo, Indhira Harry, Omkaar Tewari and Reshma Ramratan.
Large and enthusiastic groups of children and male dancers add variety to the cast. Sookrane Boodhoo and Suchitra Rampersaud will take things up a notch with delightful singing.
Tickets at $1200 and $1000 are available at the National Cultural Centre, Dharmic Sanskritik Kendra, Prashad Nagar, Bhagwan’s – Water Street, Annjee’s at the City Mall and the Murti Shop -West Coast Demerara.
Naya Zamana 15 is sponsored by Digicel and Limacol.
