Pandemonium broke loose in Linden yesterday, after news of a brazen daylight robbery, committed at Digicel’s Republic Avenue outlet hit the streets.
Persons in the vicinity said that they were not even aware of what was going on, until the cashier, who was the only person in the store at the time, ran outside screaming.
But by that time the perpetrator had run across the road and had “bolted down” nearby Daggeraad Avenue. People were soon in hot pursuit and chased him all the way to Sir David Rose Avenue, where he jumped over the Cockatara Creek, and plunged into the dense vegetation on the perimeters of the Linmine Constabulary Compound.
The police soon joined in the chase and there was a brief exchange of gunfire.
Soon residents converged on Sir David Rose Avenue, as both police and a few civilians, attacked the thick vegetation with cutlasses while the police stood with their weapons at the ready.
The man was identified by persons who knew him as a former Linmine constable, and resident of Blue Berry Hill squatting Area, Linden.
The suspect’s wife later came on the scene and also joined in the search for her husband, and she could be heard calling out to him to come out.
But there was no response, and later, only sporadic gunshots, which sent persons scampering for cover were heard.
There was speculation that the latter set of gunshots were from the suspect’s gun, but that could not be confirmed.
One of the man’s relatives who remained at the scene, pacing up and down, even after his wife had left, said the man’s actions were totally out of character, since he was not that kind of person.
She said that she last saw him on Tuesday night at the Fruit’s of Calvary Church, which he attends.
And a resident of the Constabulary Compound said that the man was armed and dangerous as he “leggo” some shots at a taxi driver who had attempted to catch him before he crossed the creek.
“The man fire two shots and tek off he shirt; he had on a black and white shirt and a black pants; but he hold on pon de money bag”.
Persons on Republic Avenue reported seeing the man loitering in the vicinity of Digicel over the past two days. He was reportedly observed earlier in the day loitering in close proximity to the store, clad in Passa Passa attire.
The brazen robbery and escape brought to mind another robbery which also occurred on Republic Avenue. The perpetrator had also sought refuge in the dense “Constab” vegetation. He was never apprehended.
Residents are calling on the authorities to clear the dense bushes.
