Dear Editor,
I witnessed one of the most disgusting things at the Office of the President (OP) on Friday last (26-06-09), when a presidential guard grabbed the hands of a reporter to take away her recorder, since he apparently thought that the journalist was recording the ‘after press conference gaff.’
What was disgusting was the fact the incident occurred in front of the Head-of-State and he stood there and did not intervene.
I am a journalist myself and I find it very unacceptable that the President’s guard would conduct himself in such an unprofessional manner.
What was most alarming was the fact that the reporter complained about the treatment meted out to her and she was brushed off by an official at the Office of the President, who in reply told her that the guard probably thought that it was a cellular phone.
Even if it was a cellular phone, why didn’t the guard approached her properly instead of grabbing her?
She was also told that ‘this is not your office so don’t make noise in here.’
The President should take note of how unprofessional his security act.
Journalists should not allow such things to happen and do nothing about it. We are considered the fourth estate in this supposedly democratic society.
The Office of the President should investigate the matter.
Journalist
