Fast Bowler Colin Duke carried his bat for an unbeaten 103 for West Berbice against Rose Hall Canje, while Rocky Kassim took a hat-trick in the same match on Sunday in the latest round of the Telenec Berbice first division cricket competition.
On a rain-affected day in the Ancient County, Rose Hall Canje kept their semi-final hopes alive with their 8-run win at Canje while Blairmont registered their first victory in the competition by beating Young Warriors by 53 runs at Blairmont.
At Canje, 19-year-old Duke, who represented Berbice in last year’s GTM Under-19 Inter-County tournament, opened the batting and was still there at the end when West Berbice fell for 216 replying to Canje’s 224-7 off their allotted 40 overs, after a late start.
Kassim, who finished with 3-32, began the final over with West Berbice needing 11 to win and after conceding three runs from the first three deliveries, grabbed the competition’s second hat-trick to finish the match in spectacular fashion to give Rose Hall Canje their second win from 4 matches.
Rocky Bipat struck 6 fours and 3 sixes in his 80 for Rose Hall Canje and got support from Vishal Mohabir (39) and Romesh Munna (38*), as off-spinner Krishnadat Ramoo took 3-50.
Ramoo’s 47 was the only real support for Duke, as Sanjay Khan (2-33) supported Kassim who joined Police’s Albert Sinclair as the bowlers with hat-tricks in the competition. Sinclair took a hat-trick in his 5-16 against Young Warriors on Saturday.
At Blairmont on Sunday, Blairmont made 128-7 off their allotted 20 overs and then bowled out Young Warriors for 85 in 18.5 overs in a game reduced to a 20 overs per side affair due to a wet area on the pitch from rain the previous day.
Romesh Boodram (45) and Herilall Bridgelall (42) missed half-centuries as left-arm spinner Anil Beharry Farouk Hussain and Charran Singh captured 2 wickets each for the Cumberland-based team.
When Young Warriors replied only Hussain (24) and national Under-19 batsman Seon Hetmyer (17) offered any fight, as the Region 5 side romped to an emphatic victory with Bisnarine Basdeo (3-11), Karandat Bissoondial (2-18) and Romesh Boodram (2-19) doing the job with the ball for the West Bank Berbice combination.
