Berbice High School played unbeaten to win the Inaugural Peter Lewis Construction Company Inter-Secondary School Under-15 Independence Football Competition, played recently at the All Saints Scots Church ground, at Princess Elizabeth Road, New Amsterdam, Berbice.
Eight schools participated in the competition namely, Overwinning Secondary, Tutorial Academy Secondary, New Amsterdam Multilateral, Berbice Educational Institute, Vryman’s Erven Annex Secondary, Vryman’s Erven Secondary, Berbice High and Canje Secondary.
The teams were placed into two groups with the top two clashing in the final. In the eventual match-up Berbice High, who did not concede a goal during the competition, needled Tutorial 1-0 thanks to Xavier Fraser.
In the presentation ceremony, BHS received the Peter Lewis Construction trophy, while TASS received the runners-up silverware and VESS collected the third place trophy.
In the individual category, BHS players took the lion’s share of the awards, with Joshua Drakes being the best goalkeeper, Dane Johnson best defender, best midfielder Xavier Fraser and best striker Graham Thomas, with six goals in the competition.
Other outstanding players on show, receiving rewards were Roy Lancaster of TASS who scored five goals and another BHS player Rawle Caesar with 4 goals.
The competition was coordinated by former national players Neil ‘Grizzly’ Humphrey and Sherwin Ford.
Forde in a speech prior to the start of the competition told the youngsters that it is important that they are taking part in sports, because it will make them good rounded men. He however emphasised that they stay in school and take in their education, because education is the key to survival.
He also urged them to be good sportsmen and to stay away from drugs and work hard to reach the top.
