Dear Editor,
Last Saturday (May 30), I witnessed what one would call a ‘today’ Primary School fair. I am a parent of a child attending the same Primary School and as is customary, I accompanied her to that school fair.
Well this is where I got a shock. First of all, as I was approaching the fair the music could be heard from a corner away, which is maybe not a problem, but it was the kind of music that was being played – very lewd dancehall music. There was one particularly offensive one which requested that the listener/dancer “ben’ over, ben’ over”.
Now this was supposed to be a fair of one of the country’s leading primary schools and it was amazing to hear the kind of music that was being allowed to be played. However that was not all, upon entering the fair it was the ‘entertainment’ that met my eyes. We are talking about children of no more than 11 years of age, both boys and girls – they were on a corridor putting on quite a show, performing the kind of dances one would see if they attend a ‘dance’ or an adult show in the National Park, and to top it off, you could hear the DJ shooting his mouth off as if it were a dance.
This was totally uncalled for at a school fair. I am appalled that the head and teachers of that school permitted such degrading behaviour.
By the way, this is a school which has a big sign on the school gate about a dress code for parents dropping their children off, and mind you, the gate is always wide open – no security guard is there and anyone can walk in and out of the school yard – so it is interesting to find out who is monitoring persons and their mode of dress.
I think that it is time the Ministry of Education look into the manner in which school fairs are conducted. We all get on television and preach about a better education system, rights of the children and morals in school and yet we allow these types of music – which encourage a certain type of behaviour – to be played at functions where there are children.
On a parting note, there was also an open bar at the fair that was selling beer. At a primary school fair! What next? Where are we heading and what are are we teaching our children.
