Dear Editor,
Away from the CPGs in the area working with the police to battle the increasing number of drug users in Enmore, a new menace has surfaced.
A number of young men with fancy vehicles and with boom boxes worth millions of dollars are competing to make the most noise. Almost nightly, but certainly on weekends, these vehicles assemble in the Enmore Martyrs Monument compound and blast away.
They generally start about 9pm. The net effect – those within earshot cannot sleep, or study, or hear their televisions. Additionally, items in their homes rattle from the decibels dished out by the young maniacs.
The situation has gone a step further. The loser in last weekend’s competition found an empty coffin at his gate and shots were fired into the air to announce the arrival of the coffin. It will be sooner than later when someone will be killed.
Information in circulation is that the recipient of the coffin and his competitor reside on the East Coast, Demerara. Each competitor is accompanied by an entourage of supporters. The parents of these competitors are said to be on the rich side. However, it is not certain whether these parents are aware of the indulgences of their children and/or support their highly unsavoury behaviour. One hopes that they are not and will take the necessary parental steps when they would have found out.
The police at Cove & John are aware of the above activity and are expecting that those residents being affected will come forward and give specific information regarding this new menace. I join the police in urging residents of Enmore to defend our community, else we will have no one to blame but ourselves. The ills that we are quiet about today will poison us tomorrow.
Let us stand firm and drive this menace from our midst.
