An eleven year old karateka attending the Winfer Gardens Primary School has been given an opportunity to achieve his most yearned for goal following the intervention of a good corporate citizen.
Joshua Nedd, the student in question, was the recipient of a one year scholarship at the Guyana Karate College, compliments Dr Phillip DaSilva of DaSilva’s Optical, South Road, Georgetown. Last Thursday morning, at a simple ceremony at the doctor’s office, Nedd received the gift.
The whole episode started when recruitment officer of the Guyana Karate College, Tanya Teixeira visited the Winfer Gardens to recruit interested persons to the sport. After having a first hand look at Nedd in training she knew that she had a good catch.
The next phase of the programme was to find enough money to assist the youth to hone his skills. It was here that Dr DaSilva came in. He immediately acquiesced to the request and has donated the entire sum to facilitate the one year programme.
The donation covers the monthly fees, karate outfit and the registration fee among other things.
Nedd was indeed grateful for the gift and told the doctor just that. He said that he was initially inspired to get involved in karate after viewing a film that starred the legendary Bruce Lee film.
“I was impressed by the quick complicated moves and I wanted to emulate them,” Nedd said. He said that his dearest wish is to attain the highest heights in the sport, a Ten Dan rating. For now he is getting ready to get started with the scholarship.
