I pen this letter in response to the many doomsayers in relation to the unexpected intense rains that we received over the past few days, which flood the city.
The Mayor and City Council (M&CC) has not been providing the quality of drainage service desired to ensure Georgetown drains speedily.
However, the Ministry of Agriculture and the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority is being wrongfully blamed for the inadequacies of the M&CC.
It is amazing how unreasonable our fellow citizens could be in the light of difficulties and natural occurrences, as many attempt to discourage the laudable efforts of some government officers who work beyond the normal call of duty to ensure that some of us sleep peaceful at nights.
I find it disturbing and rather distasteful when opposition and other political elements stoop to malign the efforts of our engineers and other technical officers who work year round to ensure all our drainage canals are kept clear. Massive works were undertaken in several areas which are evident.
However, some seek to disregard this and focus on the clogged canals, particularly, due to garbage and refuge dumped by some of those very persons pointing fingers.
I could attest to the work undertaken by the Ministry and the NDIA which has benefitted my community tremendously by reducing its vulnerability during the intense rainy season as we have been experiencing.
As such, I would like to take this opportunity to salute these hardworking officers that unsure the safety of our homes, farms, livestock, businesses and our very way of life. There are many challenges ahead and we must therefore unite and support these noble officers for their continued service and expertise.
