Hit and run victim left with spinal injuries

A hit-and run accident at Haslington, East Coast Demerara yesterday has 41 –year- old, Serajkumar Singh nursing serious spinal injures that have rendered him unable to walk.

When this newspaper visited Singh yesterday in his hospital bed in Ward A1, he said that he had just left his home at Low Land Hope East Coast Demerara when the accident happened.

He said that he was riding behind a mini-van at around 07:00 hrs when the driver, a woman, signaled that she was turning left.

Singh said that he was about to turn in the opposite direction when the mini-van driver suddenly drove into his path.

His motorcycle slammed into the side of the vehicle and he toppled to the roadway, slamming his back into a huge boulder.

The injured motorcyclist said that driver stopped and saw him lying on the road. However, he claimed that instead of offering assistance, she just drove away.

“De driver just left me on the road without even seeing if I dead or alive” Singh told this newspaper.

He said that residents who heard the commotion came to his assistance.

“After de people come to my rescue, they tried to stop the driver of the vehicle but were unsuccessful” Singh explained.

The residents then managed to stop a mobile police patrol, which took Singh to the Georgetown Hospital.

Doctors at the hospital said that Singh suffered spinal injuries, which have resulted in him being temporarily unable to walk.

At present, they are waiting until the swelling goes down for another x-ray to be done so they can ascertain the severity of his injuries.
