Looking ahead serves a greater purpose
Dear Editor,
We should cease looking back at our past waves and look forward to steer clear of coming billows, lest our national ship be tossed away.
I refer to some who say (at times via KN) that Dr. Cheddi Jagan is the “father of the nation”, because he had contributed more to the development of Guyana than did Mr. L.F.S. Burnham; others have countered by saying Burnham is the “father” using a similar argument.
The controversy continues as each side highlights the outstanding achievements of these two great leaders. Their respective administrations have had their successes and failures.
Messrs. Burnham and Jagan have long passed away. The nation is grateful for the good they have done, but should desist from continuously looking back at their records (past waves) to assess which has done more.
They are dead and cannot help in solving the many problems which are plaguing Guyana. Instead we should look at our new president, Mr. Jagdeo, and try to assist him in solving these problems, specifically those huge ones (billows), which are coming in the distance. As past waves keep moving back their energy is dissipated into mere ripples and they disappear. It is an exercise in futility to look at that which has disappeared.
The current problems are affecting us, the living, not those who have gone to the great beyond.
