…stabs ex-lover, burns her house, turns knife on self
Bernadette Jackson, a 52-year-old ex-army rank, was stabbed twice in her neck last evening, by her former reputed husband, 65-year-old Clinton Barker, after a heated exchange ensued when she attempted to retrieve some clothing she had left in the house they shared, some time last year.
The man subsequently burnt the house; stabbed himself and slashed his abdomen in a failed suicide attempt. The police eventually took him to hospital.
This newspaper understands that the Food for the Poor organisation had constructed the house for Jackson, some years ago.
Speaking to this newspaper following the incident last evening, Jackson said that she was forced to run and leave Barker after enduring some 11 years of what she described as incessant torment.
“Ah can’t tek it no more…and he ain’t coming out. Up to last Saturday he call me and tell me ah gat to get a bulldozer fuh move he out.” She said that the man also told her that she would have to bring her brothers to evict him.
According to her, she had only managed to retrieve a few pieces of clothing when she moved out of the house to live with a relative last year.
The woman recounted that on several occasions she attempted to acquire her remaining possessions, even resorting to making reports to the police, but to no avail. “They (police) say is a private matter.”
The woman said that last evening she went to collect a piece of clothing to wear on Easter Monday, and Barker allowed her into the home. As she was retrieving the clothing out of a drawer all she heard was, “Yuh is a dead f…ing woman.”
She said that when she turned around she saw Barker with knife drawn.
“I put up a fight…a good fight…and the only way I coulda get away from he is put a bite in he…and a hold he and a dash he into the fridge…and I get fuh open de door.”
The grip she maintained on his arm, with her teeth, caused her to damage her teeth.
She added that at that time a neighbour had come over and assisted her out of the yard. Shortly after she was escorted out of the yard, the enraged man set the house ablaze, scaled the fence and went out to a shop some distance away.
It was there that the man attempted suicide by slashing his abdomen. “People come and tell me he buss he belly by a shop weh he does go and drink.”
The women described the relationship as tormenting, given that Barker would drink incessantly and was very possessive. “He does draw $16,000 pension every month and it don’t last a week.”
Barker is a civilian painter attached to the army and Jackson was a rank in the army from 1974 to 1997.
