– Pres. Jagdeo
Head of State Bharrat Jagdeo yesterday told media operatives that the People’s Progressive Party has taken careful note that detractors of former President Janet Jagan have opportunistically exposed their hand within less than 24 hours of her State Funeral, “seeking to suggest that her passing and our loss provide an opportunity for Guyanese to reconcile.”
According to the President, “They deviously imply that it was Jagan who was the obstacle to reconciliation and to building national unity…The party notes that in their larger agenda they are prepared to continue to besmirch her name, and moreso, the fundamental commitment of the PPP from its inception to national unity, questioning how genuine were her efforts and how sincere has been the party’s commitment to that ideal.”
The President said that the Party, from its inception, and even after the 1955 split, has consistently sought national unity and has made concessions along the way to preserve and enhance national social cohesion.
This, he said, consequentially laid the basis for the parliamentary reform process, which the country enjoys today; “also the most progressive in the region and comparable with more advanced democracies in the Commonwealth. The Herdmanston and St. Lucia Accords are examples of these concessions.”
The President was adamant that the PPP rejects any suggestion that Janet Jagan might have been against national unity inconsistent with the nobility and the ideals of the Jagans and the Party they formed and led.
“The PPP re-affirms that its leadership and membership remain united and solidly committed to its past record of service to the people of Guyana and this nation of ours, particularity at reconciliation and forging national unity…The PPP, furthermore, is committed and will continue to strive to find common grounds and opportunities at the level of the National Assembly with the Opposition, with civil society and at the community levels in order to enhance confidence and build trust and unity amongst our people.”
The President said that the PPP remains committed to continuing this process at all levels -governmental, parliamentary and extra-parliamentary, such as initiatives as the National Stakeholders’ Forum, accessibility and visibility amongst the people, all of which are the hallmarks of the Jagan legacy.
Jagdeo pointed out that Janet Jagan’s entire life work was on finding ways to reconcile the nation, to improve their conditions of life and to struggle for peace and social and political stability.
“The PPP rejects the public statements of those members of the PPP who attempt to speak on behalf of the PPP on this matter and pander to these worthless suggestions.
The Executive committee of the PPP stands firm and united behind Mrs. Jagan’s legacy and rejects all those who attempt to speak on behalf of the PPP and in so doing, purposely misrepresents its past track record and its honourable positions.”
