Police have detained a 25-year-old in connection with the murders of Romeo and Clint De Agrella, whose bullet-riddled bodies were found on Monday in the Atlantic Ocean near Iron Punt, North West District.
The man in custody at the Anna Regina Police Station is a nephew of 41-year-old Romeo De Agrella, and relatives said he was taken into custody shortly after the bodies were found.
The nephew is the same relative who had found the victims’ vessel after a search was launched for the missing men. Kaieteur News understands that police are attempting to clear up some apparent discrepancies in the man’s statement relating to the discovery of the boat, which bore bloodstains and bullet-holes. Police officials also confirmed that investigators had also detained Mr. De Agrella’s wife on Monday but eventually released her yesterday afternoon, after further questioning. The woman said that she has no idea why she was placed in custody.
Meanwhile, an autopsy conducted yesterday confirmed that both men succumbed to multiple gunshot injuries.
According to an official, 20-year-old Clint De Agrella sustained bullet wounds to the head, while his 41-year-old father was shot in the back.
Both victims appeared to have been shot at close range and a warhead police retrieved indicated that the killer(s) used an assault rifle.
However, police appear to have no clear motive for the brutal double murder.
According to his wife, Mr. De Agrella traveled regularly to Venezuela, where he would purchase hassars.
She said that the father and son were unlikely to be carrying large sums of cash with them on the return voyage.
Relatives told Kaieteur News that the family operates a dredge at Barama, North West District, and also said that Mr. De Agrella had no dispute with anyone. Because of their decomposed state, relatives were forced to have the victims interred first at the Charity cemetery yesterday, before holding a memorial service for them. A brief police statement issued yesterday said that that the victims, who lived at Grant Hope, Pomeroon, had left Venezuela to return to Guyana on March 20, 2009, and after not returning as expected they were reported as missing to the police on March 22, 2009.
The following day, relatives went in search of the father and son, and the nephew who is currently in custody eventually found the bullet-riddled and bloodstained boat, minus its engine.
The nephew has reportedly told police that passengers on another vessel had reported seeing the overturned vessel near Shell Beach.
At around 13:00 hrs on Monday, relatives found Romeo De Agrella’s decomposing body near Iron Punt.
Clint De Agrella’s corpse was found some hours later about three miles away.
