Guyana’s request to play in the Caribbean Zonal Association (CAZOVA) will be up for discussion at the 62nd South American Volleyball Congress which is scheduled to be held on March 25 in Uruguay.
According to Guyana Volleyball Federation (GVF) President Lenox Shuffler, approval from CSV will pave the way for Guyana’s qualification to play in future Caribbean Games after being prevented from participating in the inaugural event because of its membership with the CSV.
Shuffler in a release said that he has informed the CSV that while GVF has been affiliated to the CSV since 1965, playing its first CSV tournament in 1969 long before CAZOVA was formed, Guyana was invited to participate in the 4th English-speaking Caribbean Tournament in 1975 and was runner-up to host Bahamas. Guyana then hosted the 5th English-speaking Caribbean Tournament in 1978 and was again runner-up this time beaten finalist to the US Virgin Islands.
Shuffler disclosed that he pointed out in his request Guyana is a member of Caricom and is very involved in regional integration stemming from its strong cultural roots to the Caribbean.
The GVF President added that Guyana, being a member of CSV and afforded the opportunity to play in CAZOVA it could create a link in the sport between South America and the Caribbean at a particular level.
He expressed optimism that his request will be granted and is anxiously awaiting the outcome of the Congress.
