President of Alpha United Odinga Lumumba has disclosed that a squad of twenty-eight players is currently encamped at Camp Seweyo on the Linden Soesdyke Highway as preparations for the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Club Champions Cup.
The team which is also competing in the Annual Mayor’s Cup, which they are using as warm up for the CFU tournament, has been under the watchful eyes of player/assistant coach Charles Pollard.
Lumumba disclosed that sessions have been going very well since encampments commenced over one week ago and head coach Mervin Wilson is expected to join the team next week.
Alpha were drawn to play Haiti’s Tampete FC of Haiti and the first match of the home and away first round is set for the GCC ground Bourda on Saturday March 21st. The return leg will be played one week later in Haiti.
A supporting match to the Alpha/Tempete game will be played between arch rivals, Pele – the reigning Kashif and Shanghai kings and BK International Western Tigers – the Banks Beer division one champions.
This match up is expected to be a mouth watering affair with the Tigers, who are retuning to the Premier League ranks out to prove that they belong at the higher level having destroyed all their opponents in the division one.
Lumumba has reiterated his call for all Guyana to come out and support Alpha since they are representing Guyana at the regionallevel. Support from the corporate community he said has been rolling in slowly and entities who have contributed to date are Humphrey’s Bakery & Farm Products, Courtney Benn Contracting Company, National Milling Company of Guyana, N&S Mattai & Company, Royal Castle, Food for the Poor and New GPC. The Government of Guyana has promised their support.
A number of national players were added to Alpha roster as they seek to strengthen with the aim of in the first instance, getting past Tampete FC.
