This derelict building must be pulled down
Dear Editor,
First of all I must congratulate Kaieteur News for publishing on January 23, the photograph of the derelict house located at the corners of Barrack and High Streets, Georgetown.
My neighbours and I often talk about this place being a fire hazard, not to forget the unsavory characters who live in it, as they pose a threat to security in the area.
S for sanitation, there is none. We often see people in the house throwing rubbish, food and water from the upstairs window to the ground below. The place stinks under the house.
As for drains outside, they’re always filled with bottles, food containers and old cloth. They never clean the drains like other neighbours. This house is not fit for dwelling and if a fire starts there, the people and their houses around will be in danger.
We, the neighbours in the area, strongly feel that this house should be pulled down. I read an article by the Mayor in the SN on January 25, in which he stated that the owner of the building is prepared to undertake repairs. What repairs? I know that this building is beyond repairs. There is hardly a piece of wood that is not rotten.
It was already placed on the list of derelict houses two years ago for demolition, and today it’s even worse. So I am sorry, this place is not for repairs, it’s for demolition!!!! It’s an eyesore and should be pulled down immediately. Somebody has exaggerated the number of people living in there. It’s definitely not 100.
