An entertaining, unbeaten 75 from the inform Ricky Deonarine propelled Guyana Floodlights softball team to a comfortable four wicket victory over Trophy Stall XI in a featured 25- over softball match on Friday night last at the Everest cricket ground.
The softball side, who recently returned home after participating in the World Cup tournament in Florida, galloped to 185- 6 in the 19th over replying to Trophy Stall XI’s challenging 180- 8 at the expiration of the overs.
The right- handed Deonarine, a former senior inter- county softball batsman, who was later named man- of- the- match smashed five sixes and three fours; he received support from Fidel Singh, who chipped in with 26, as Dennis Mangroo, Everest’s first division player, snatched four wickets for 24 runs from four overs.
Earlier, the Reyaz Husein- led Trophy Stall XI combination won the toss and immediately opted to take first strike and were off to a solid start as Kameel Khan and Ravendra Madholall posted 103 for the first wicket, before Madholall departed for 43, which included three sixes.
Khan was the aggressor reaching the boundary on two occasions, while he cleared it six times. Singh finished with three for 18 from his allotted five overs and Ragbeer Ramchand claimed two for 21 from four overs.
At the presentation ceremony, the Guyana Floodlights Association honoured Deonarine for his highest individual score of 113 in the World Cup in Florida. He received a plaque with a photo of him while receiving the prize in Florida.
Deonarine received two trophies for being the best batsman too, while Singh copped the best bowler prize; best fieldsman went to Ramchand and best catcher was Mark Harold of the winning side.
On the losing side, the best batsman was Khan, while the best catch award went to Madholall; best bowler Mangroo and best fieldsman Steven Narine.
All received trophies, compliments of Trophy Stall of Bourda Market and the City Mall.
