Cops counting on forensic tests to solve Berbice double murder

Local detectives are counting on forensic tests to lead them to the killer of 18-year-old Alexis George and 25-year-old Nekecia Rouse, who were slain at New Amsterdam, Berbice last week.

A police official told Kaieteur News yesterday that investigators are conducting forensic tests on blood samples found at the scenes where the two women were slain. The tests are being done locally, and the results should be known within a few days. According to the source, when the results are known investigators will seek advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions.
However, the source declined to say whether investigators are attempting to match the victims’ blood samples against blood that was found on the suspects’ clothing or at their homes.
If the samples help identify the killer, it would be the first time in recent years that local police have successfully used forensic science — other than fingerprints and ballistics —to solve a murder.
Two Sundays ago the body of Nekecia Rouse, called ‘Nicky’, was found in her mother’s house at New Amsterdam, while Alexis George, who resided at the same house, was found dead in a yard. George sustained wounds to the left side of the neck, left hand and left foot, while Rouse’s body bore stab wounds to the left side of the neck, left ear and the right shoulder. Death was due to shock and hemorrhage.
Police had detained seven men who knew the victims, but they have been released on station bail.
Among those held was a former U.S. soldier who was a prime suspect in the 2004 murder of his wife in Germany. A policeman was among those detained.
