Guyoil has pumped $1.6 million into the eighth annual Castrol 50-overs under-15 Inter County cricket competition which starts on February 28 in Essequibo.
Guyana Cricket Board President (GCB) Chetram Singh thanked Guyoil for their continued support for the competition and said that without sponsorship no sporting association can properly run off their tournaments.
“This is a very important competition since the Guyana (junior) selectors use it to invite players to trials for possible selection on the Guyana under-15 team. This year the regional under-15 tournament is set for Guyana in April and we look forward to having our best team on show,” Singh disclosed at the launching of the competition yesterday at the Guyoil Gas Station on Regent Street
“We cherish this sponsorship since it prepares our players for the youngest regional competition and this year, like last year, we could again see a West Indies team being picked to play in a World under-15 championship,” Singh continued.
Castrol Brand Manager Leonard Khan said Guyoil was pleased to be associated with the competition for the eighth consecutive year and said the aim is to see players from this competition progress to the International level.
“We need to invest in our youths and the responsibility is on corporate entities like us to create the opportunity for these guys to develop their game,” Khan explained.
He said that cricket teaches discipline and team-work and is not just a game. Khan commended the GCB for decentralizing the competition this year and playing four games on the Essequibo Coast.
The Guyoil official promised that his company will play their part in the development of local cricket with continued sponsorship of the competition.
Defending champions Demerara will play Essequibo in back-to-back matches on February 28 and March 1 at the Anna Regina ground before Berbice and Essequibo clash in two games at the same venue on March 3 & 4.
The final two matches will be played between Berbice and Demerara at the Guyana National Stadium on March 6 & 7 and admission to all of the games is free.
