Frankie Persaud, 40, of Third Street, Diamond, East Bank Demerara, and a vendor in Georgetown, appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson on Wednesday charged with simple larceny.
It is alleged that the accused on February 9, last, stole a shoulder bag containing a purse, one Bank Card valued at $5,000, a pair of sunglasses and $55,000 cash, the property of Patricia Young. He pleaded not guilty to the charge.
According to Young, she was in the vicinity of the Stabroek Market waiting for her father to come pick her up, when from nowhere the defendant came out and snatched her bag.
“Your worship he started to run; I ran behind, and then I reach up to the police and tell them what happened.”
The prosecution stated that although the items were recovered, Persaud should be refused bail, adding that he is not a first time offender.
Just last month, Persaud was before the courts for stealing a pair of jeans from Giftland OfficeMax.
He was refused bail and ordered to return to court on February 25, 2009.
