Face Guyana from Friday at Providence Stadium
Jamaica’s cricket selectors have welcomed back wrist-spinner Gavin Wallace to their 13-man squad which travels to Guyana today ahead of Friday’s start of their sixth round West Indies Cricket Board 4-day regional game at the Providence Stadium.
Defending champions Jamaicans, who rested during last week’s fifth round, remain atop the league table with 42 points, three ahead of second-placed Barbados. From Guyana, the Jamaicans will travel to Dominica to meet the Windward Islands.
Wallace, with 17 wickets in three away games, missed Jamaica’s fourth-round victory over Barbados at Kensington Park late last month because he was part of the West Indies ‘A’ team in a run-glut of a drawn game against touring England in St Kitts.
Wallace, who had second-innings figures of 8-20 on his regional debut for Jamaica early last month, regains his place at the expense of the off-spinner, Bevon Brown.
Left-arm spinner Nikita Miller and wrist-spinner Odean Brown are also in the squad for today’s trip. As has been the case for the past two games, all three specialist spinners are expected to play on Friday.
Miller, Odean Brown and Wallace have taken 49 wickets between them thus far this season and have been by far and away the principal reason for Jamaica’s success.
Once again, fast bowler Andrew Richardson and seamer David Bernard will share the new ball. But this time, reserve cover for the fast bowlers will come from the highly touted 20 year-old Jason Dawes who was a standout at the Youth World Cup a year ago.
Dawes, out of the squad for the fourth round, returns in place of another 20 year-old, Andre Russell, who had modest returns (two wickets) in two away games against the Leeward Islands and Trinidad & Tobago.
Chairman of Jamaica’s selection panel, Nehemiah Perry, said the switch of Dawes for Russell was largely influenced by the expectation of the conditions in Guyana.
As expected, batsman Xavier Marshall, who was dropped by the West Indies selectors for the second Test, returns to the Jamaica squad at the expense of the teenager Horace Miller.
Squad: Tamar Lambert (Captain), Danza Hyatt, Brenton Parchment, Xavier Marshall, Donovan Pagon, David Bernard Jnr, Wavell Hinds, Keith Hibbert, Odean Brown, Nikita Miller, Gavin Wallace, Jason Dawes, Andrew Richardson.
Deron Dixon – Manager; Junior Bennett – Coach; David Bernard Sr – Fitness Trainer.
