Lowers last years mark

16 year-old sensation Christopher Holder was again in brilliant form as he successfully defended both the senior and junior titles when the National Sports Commission (NSC) held the 8th annual Mashramani 40-mile road race on the West Demerara yesterday.

Holder, who on Saturday blistered the field in the feature 30-lap event at the 3rd annual George Cumberbatch Memorial Meet, once again carried the pace to his senior counterparts and reaped the desired rewards finishing the course in 1 hour 42 minutes 54 seconds. In the process he lowered last year’s mark of 1 hour 44 minutes 62 seconds.
Holder, slowly etching his name in the history books as one of the best sprinters in Guyana even at this tender age, won the battle ahead of junior rival Geron Williams, Warren ‘Forty’ Mc Kay, Raymond Newton, still holding his own as a veteran, Tony Simon and Darren Allen who crossed the line ahead of his colleagues in the second pack.
Mc Kay pocketed two of the six prime prizes, while claiming one each were Holder, Williams, Newton, and Simon.
Speaking with the media after another excellent win, Holder, who has shown a tremendous liking for the West Demerara circuit, disclosed that this was his first back to back victory in a young budding career and he was very pleased with his performance.
“The race was good for me, I went on the breakaway after it started which was easy but it was a difficult to establish a lead but I was successful in the end.”
The Christ Church student also informed that the rain which fell from start to finish played a part in him being victorious since it helped to keep him cool.
“Whenever there is a lot of sun it tends to drain your energy and I think I ride well in the rain.” He also said that yesterday’s race did not have much attacking like Saturday’s but the pace was higher than the day before.
Holder is hoping to dominate this weekend’s races as he seeks to maintain a winning momentum. Riders will be back at the National Park on Saturday while on Sunday it is back to the West Demerara.
Administrative Officer of the NSC Gervy C. Harry presented the prizes to the successful riders. The race was organised by National Cycling Coach Hassan Mohamed.
