GNA holds first Executive Meeting
– new initiatives outlined
In an effort to include outlying communities and broaden the scope of the game in the country, the Guyana Netball Association outlined a number of new initiatives it intends to pursue, during its first Executive Meeting recently.
Among the decisions made during the discourse was to investigate the possibility of re-introducing the sport in communities such as Buxton, Kwakwani and Linden, while the formation of a Disciplinary Committee was also discussed where the members agreed to write persons who were identified seeking their willingness to serve on the Committee.
It was also agreed that there was need to broaden the membership and some clubs which have not been functioning and or participating in competitions will be written to shortly among them being GDF, Flames of Berbice and Emanie.
The GNA has undertaken the responsibility to write the Guyana Police Force, Guyana Prison Service, Guyana Fire Service and The Bank of Guyana to ascertain if those institutions are interested in being part of the Association indicating its willingness to supply Coaches in the first instance.
Eight schools will be used as pilot projects and they include: Queens College, St Stanislaus College, East Ruimveldt Govt Secondary, Campbellville Secondary, St Joseph’s High, YWCA, Guyana Educational Trust and Nehemiah Comprehensive and it is envisaged that two teachers from each of the aforementioned schools will be trained as coaches.
Local Tournaments

The dates for local tournaments have been tentatively set for – Inter Club Under-16 July 17, 18 and 19; Inter Club U-18 September 18, 19 and 20 and Seniors September 25, 26 and 27, 2009.
The Body unanimously agreed to strive to vigorously uplift the standard of Coaching and Umpiring by conducting Courses. A number of Coaches have already indicated their willingness to visit Guyana to assist and the GNA are currently keenly looking at their budgeted allocation.
It was also disclosed that President of the Caribbean Netball Association Ms Kathy Harper Hall is expected in the country soon to conduct a Healthy Lifestyle Programme and the GNA will be seeking to solicit her services to run off a Coaching Course and Umpiring Exams.
On the issue of Netball Courts, the GNA intends to approach the Government and the Mayor and City Council asking their assistance to develop a Netball facility to play international matches and or tournaments.
It was stated that the National Park Tarmac has been earmarked for use in the interim for friendly internationals.
However, that facility will have to be resurfaced and an approach to the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport will be made for their input, at least three courts could be installed there.
Another initiative that was discussed is the intention to produce a quarterly or monthly newsletter outlining the Association’s activities, while
attempts will be made to contact former players to share their expertise and experience in an effort to aid the GNA’s forward trust. The GNA is asking all past players to make contact with current members of the fraternity.
Fund Raisers

The first fund raiser, to be held this week, will take the form of a Take Away Lunch which will be held at the National Gymnasium.
Following that, a raffle will be held and is expected to be drawn in the month of April, while the entity plans to erect a food and drinks Bar on February 23, Mashramani Day.
The Caribbean Netball Association 10th Jean Pierre Youth (U16) Tournament is scheduled for April 22-30 in Jamaica.
Countries have until February 15 to indicate their willingness to participate. Guyana is among a host of other Caribbean countries that has signalled their intentions to participate in the event. At that tournament the CNA will be hosting their AGM.
Teams that withdraw from the competition after confirming their participation will be liable to a fine and or even suspension. The GNA has since sent out sponsorship letters and have received favourable responses from a reputable commercial bank and a shipping magnate, while pledges from other persons were also received. The names of the organisations will be released shortly.
Team preparations
–
The team continues to train at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall on Saturdays where physical exercises are done, while during the month of March the team will intensify sessions under the guidance of Head Coach Lawrence Kellman. The Manager is Shondell Samaroo.
