But Leewards hold advantage going into final day

The Leeward Islands were in a strong position to claim their first win of the season at the end of day three in their fourth round match of the West Indies Cricket Board tournament against Guyana at Grove Park yesterday.

Akito Willett is trapped leg before to left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul who took 3-54 as the Leewards fell for 244 in Nevis yesterday.

This is despite a career-best six for 64 by leg-spinner Davendra Bishoo which helped to dismiss the Leewards for 244 in their second innings. The Leewards’ first innings score of 225 and Guyana’s 229 means that the Guyanese were set 241 for victory. They closed the day on 36 for two with Captain Travis Dowlin (22) and Christopher Barnwell (0), already back in the pavilion.

In the period of life after Mahendra Nagamootoo and Neil McGarrell, the young Guyana bowling attack has missed the experience of the two former Test spinners but yesterday, 20-year-old Bishoo, in tandem with 19-year-old left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul, shared nine wickets as once again the Leewards’ batsmen failed to build on some solid starts. Montcin Hodge with 78 was the exception until he lost concentration and was leg-before-wicket to a Bishoo straight ball.

Hodge, who resumed the penultimate day on 36 with the Leewards on 63 for one, batted for 228 minutes, faced 180 deliveries and struck 10 fours.

The first blow of the day was however struck by off-spinner Steven Jacobs who trapped Runako Morton LBW for four with the score on 76. Thereafter it was all Bishoo and Permaul as the pair from Albion in Berbice, collected 16 of the 20 Leewards’ wickets to fall in the match.

Bishoo, in only his second season at this level, struck soon after lunch, taken at 137 for two, when he removed Hodge – breaking a third-wicket stand of 64 with Tonito Willett (32). The leg-spinner then bowled Willett between his legs at 161 for four and then had Omari Banks (32) caught at slip by Barnwell.

Permaul got into the action after tea, taken at 203 for five, having Steve Liburd (32) smartly caught at slip by Barnwell.

Permaul who alone with Jacobs were in the West Indies team that participated in last year’s under-19 World Cup in Malaysia, quickly removed Akito Willette (8) and Jahmar Hamilton (17), both to LBW verdicts. Bishoo polished off the innings as Gavin Tonge provided Barnwell with his third catch at slip, before bowling Anthony Martin between his legs.

The leg-spinner’s figures bettered his previous best of five for 29 on debut against the Combined Campuses and Colleges last year at Guyana National Stadium in Providence. His match aggregate of nine for 98 bettered his seven for 47 in that game, while Permaul’s three for 54 gave him match figures of seven for 96.

With just about an hour in the day and the entire final day to reach the modest target, the Guyanese were off to a disastrous start when Barnwell was bowled in the first over by a delivery from Tonge which kept low.

Dowlin looked comfortable in adding 35 for the second wicket with Shemroy Barrington before patting a full toss from leg-spinner Martin to Banks at mid-wicket.

When stumps were drawn Barrington was unbeaten on 13 and with him was night watchman Trevon Garraway who is yet to score.

The stage is set for an intriguing final day today for even though the Leewards appear to hold the advantage, it is still a good track for batting, and with Narsingh Deonarine still to come the Guyanese, hunting their first win this season, cannot be written off.
