Dear Editor,
As a young Guyanese, I am astounded by the refusal of many public people to file their statutory declarations with the Integrity Commission. Imagine these people make laws but are unwilling to abide by their own laws. My bewilderment is so great that I struggle to find the words to write this letter.
Those who preach at the podium against corruption and make accusations against the Government about corruption are those that are unwilling to prove their uprightness.
I stand as a witness in front of the entire nation, distastefully watching our lawmakers ignore the Laws of Guyana. I wonder to myself, why should we adhere to the laws if those in authority refuse to comply with the laws that govern them in front of an entire nation? Have they no dignity? Such an act only deteriorates the integrity and credibility of these officials.
I bend my head in dismay at these people. What is so wrong in proving yourself as honest and trustworthy?
Imagine those who claim to be ensuring that there is accountability and transparency in Governance are intentionally refusing to comply with the Laws of Guyana; such an act only signifies chaos and lawlessness.
Who are these people representing ‘public people’ and ‘lawmakers’ to lecture us on what is good or right?
And so the fruits of the charlatan’s tree will not be picked, but instead fall to the ground and crush. Marissa Lowden
