A former member of the Guyana Police Force is in custody after he was nabbed with a loaded 9mm pistol on Friday night.
Kaieteur News understands that a group of police ranks was on patrol on the East Bank Demerara Public Road, at around 22:00 hrs, when they stopped a car near the Providence Police Station.
Police said that the male occupant produced an identification card which identified him as a policeman.
However, the ranks searched the car and unearthed a 9mm pistol with a magazine containing eight rounds of ammunition.
On being questioned, the occupant of the car allegedly admitted that he was no longer a member of the Force and that the license for his firearm had expired since 2007.
He then produced another identification card which indicated that he was a Supernumerary Constable employed at a city bank.
The firearm was seized and the ex-cop was detained at the Brickdam Police Station pending further investigations.
