Dear Editor,
Following the recent heavy rainfall experienced along the coastland, which affected the livelihood of many farmers and destroyed supplemental household kitchen gardens, the government’s response has been prompt in getting the water off the land and in assisting those affected.
As a farmer who was severely affected, I am pleased that I could have benefitted from the government’s assistance programme to help me return to till my land as the water is long gone and the land is ready to be replanted. Farming is my only means of livelihood and the assistance is most welcomed.
It is a fact that most farmers were expecting financial assistance; however, I am pleased that the government through the Ministry of Agriculture opted to give assistance in kind rather than cash. This is the only guaranteed way that legitimate farmers will return to the land, while a farmer or non-farmer receiving cash assistance would have diverted it elsewhere.
Those in authority must be commended for implementing such an assistance programme.
While I am grateful for the assistance, I would like to say that most farmers are proud people and do not want to depend on the government for assistance whenever it rains heavily.
As such, I am calling on all Guyanese, in particular, my fellow farmers to work together with the relevant authorities to embrace the effects of erratic rainfall and the challenges of climate change. Together we can overcome. Carlos De Barros‘
