As a Guyanese ship owner, I am sure that in ventilating my opinions on the harsh treatment of Mr. English, other ship owners have the same sentiments.
I would like to express my heartfelt disappointment at the dismissal of the Director General of the Maritime Administration Department. The Director is a prominent figure in the Caribbean shipping industry/ organisation. Over the years, he was very instrumental in bringing international recognition to the Guyana Registry, and consequently caused the increase in tonnage under our flag, which added up to increased revenue.
Personally, Mr. English was responsible for numerous vessels to delete from foreign flags and register here, simply because he was always available to ship owners seeking advice and assistance.
He is a man with a wealth of knowledge and experience in his field, and has great influence in the maritime world. The manner in which he was taken out of office was not becoming for the reason given.
I am therefore asking Mr. Minister Robeson Benn to put all differences aside and review his stance on Mr. Ivor English.
