Six committees named, female cricket to get attention

The recently elected executive committee of the Essequibo Cricket Board (ECB) is pacing ahead with plans for the improvement of the game in the Cinderella County.
They held their first meeting on Saturday last following the just concluded elections where Sheik Asif Ahmad took over the reigns of leadership from Alvin Johnson.
Apart from naming members to six committees, Ahmad disclosed that a number of pertinent matters regarding the forward movement of the game were discussed at length at the meeting which lasted for close to five hours.
Faizul Bacchus was appointed chairman of the junior selection committee, Roland Persaud of Bartica and Forbes Daniels, are the two members. Heading the senior selection committee is Elroy Stephaney, Vibert Johnson and Bacchus will serve as members.
The disciplinary committee consists of the President, Secretary (Linden Daniels) and Public Relations Officer (Carl Brandon).
Edward Skeete will serve as chairman of the competitions committee with Mervin Pearson as secretary. One member from each of the eight (8) Area Committees will complete this committee.
Chairing the cricket development committee is Stephaney with Pearson as secretary. Heading the marketing committee is Prince Holder, while Ato Christiani will serve as secretary. Ahmad disclosed that it is the aim of the ECB to have a broad based marketing committee and to this end they have written the Essequibo Chamber of Commerce to have a representative serve
on the committee. A number of other business entities have also been invited to nominate representatives.
The ECB will soon be short listing 30 players to commence preparations for the upcoming Castrol Inter-County competition. If the current rainy weather persists, Ahmad said that they will use the indoor facility at South Essequibo to prepare. The names of the players will be released when the competition dates become available after the GCB elections.
Forbes Daniels has been appointed coach of the under-15 squad with Stephaney serving as Manager.
The competitions committee has been tasked with the responsibility of preparing budgets and for respective under-15 and 19 domestic competitions.
A number of competitions rolling over from 2008 are to be completed as soon as the weather improves, Ahmad disclosed.
Among them are the Hand in Hand two-day tournament zone A featuring Pomeroon, North, South and Central Essequibo, GCB two-day zone B involving Bartica, Leguan and Wakenaam and the Ministry of Education/GCB schools cricket between Essequibo/Pomeroon and Leguan/Wakenaam. Central Essequibo are also in the Gafson’s twenty 20 playoffs.
The completion of the Hostel with the capacity to host two teams and also equipped with two mud and concrete pitches is expected to be achieved by February month end.
Ahmad informed that workmen are administering the finishing touches (plumbing, electrical & landscaping) to the Stanford Funded project which will be a big boost to the sport in Essequibo.
The ECB will also be aiming to attract females to the game and plans are in train to run off an inter-secondary tournament involving schools from the County.
With regard to the preparation of grounds and maintenance of facilities, Ahmad disclosed that the NDC’s will be approached to play a major part in this regard. A meeting with the respective heads has already been planned.
