What appears to be a land dispute between two villagers ended up yesterday with one of them being shot in the right thigh by the other.
According to hospital sources, Quarpaul Hoodit, 47, of Lot 77 Marshall Street, Annandale, East Coast Demerara was shot in the right thigh by another villager identified as Harripersaud Bhagwandin, 51, a businessman of 117 Marshall Street, South Annandale. The latter sustained injuries to his head from a hammer blow.
Kaieteur News understands that Bhagwandin had bought the building in which Hoodit was the caretaker. After the sale, Hoodit was required to vacate the building but he refused. Three days ago Hoodit vacated the property.
According to sources, the shooting was spurred yesterday when Hoodit, along with his son, Mahadeo returned to the building and started to remove materials.
Bhagwandin and the two men had a heated exchange after which the gunshots were fired. It is alleged that Hoodit had earlier struck the businessman on his head with a hammer and Bhagwandin was forced to use his firearm to defend himself. Hoodit was shot in the thigh and the police were summoned.
Both parties were taken to the hospital for medical treatment, and Bhagwandin’s firearm was lodged.
He was treated and sent away, while Hoodit was admitted to the institution.
Up to press time the police on the East Coast were investigating the matter.
