The authorities must be complimented

Dear Editor,
It is this time of the year when everyone is rejoicing and celebrating the festive season but at the same time many of us are experiencing flooded situations and losing our crops and livestock.
The rain has been falling a great deal over the past few weeks and according to what I am hearing from the Hydromet Department, I think we will be having some very heavy downpours in the weeks to come. There is nothing that I or anyone can do to stop the rains but there is a lot that can be done to clear our drains and canals.
Recently, most parts of the East Coast were under water and there were many officers from various agencies within the Ministry of Agriculture who visited the areas.
At first, we thought that they were only visiting and that nothing would be done, but eventually I saw relief in various forms coming from these officers; vets brought medicines for the animals, etc. I do compliment them for their hard work.
Also, I must compliment the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority for the work they are doing since my area and most areas along the East Coast of Demerara are drained and the water has receded significantly.
Currently most of the lands in Hope and Nootenzuil where I reside have witnessed a high reduction of water. I am very happy about this and I am quite sure that the authorities will keep up the good work they are doing.
I wish to extend a prosperous new year to all your readers and moreso those individuals who have worked very hard to remove the high waters from the coast.
