Dear Editor,
I understand that the University of Guyana (UG) at the Tain Campus has a new Director. Could someone in the UG administration inform the public as to why and how the former Director, Dr. Parsram Thakur, was removed?
What procedures were used? Was he treated fairly? Was he justly compensated for his service? Did the UG violate Dr. Thakur’s contract? From all indications, there has been a rift between Dr. Thakur and known members in the higher echelon of UG administration who were determined to have him removed ever since he accepted the job eight years ago. Dr. Thakur was against the exploitation and marginalisation of Tain campus. Dr. Thakur proved to be a highly intelligent, perceptive individual, endowed with creative abilities and brilliant ideas.
He has been a very conscientious, dedicated and positive person as well as a keen thinker at Tain Campus. Dr. Thakur recruited scholars from India and elsewhere to work at UG Tain campus. He had established an amazing network that led to an amazing contribution to Tain campus.
Through him many have donated books and other materials and services to Tain campus. Other contributions and services have been in the pipeline, such as setting scholarship funds, bringing overseas faculty to teach at a cheaper rate than what has been paid at Turkeyen faculty. Yet, they fired this man.
What a loss to Berbice and the academic community. Once again, here is a classic case of academic marginalisation. The Berbice campus has been subjected to policies and procedures from the Turkeyen-centric campus. Does Turkeyen campus allow Berbice campus the political and administrative spine so needed to dictate its own local reality?
The firing of Dr. Thakur does not seem to indicate that.
