Cleveland Forde shrugged off his almost career threatening hamstring cramp sustained in the Suriname Marathon a few weeks ago to become the first Caribbean athlete to finish the Run Barbados 10k race on Saturday.
The somewhat lean, Kenyatrained distance runner clocked 31:14 to place fourth overall in the men’s race behind Robert Kiprotich Letti, who won in 29:59, Dylan Wykes (30:41) and Daniel Cheruiyot (31:08) respectively. Letti and Cheruiyot represented the United States of America while Wykes competed for Canada in the event.
Forde was the lone Caribbean athlete from Guyana in the top fray of the 25th edition of the Run Barbados 10k race.
Forde told Kaieteur Sport on Tuesday that his leg felt unusual after the race, which hinted that he has not fully recovered from the cramps problem that forced him out of contention at this year’s Suriname Marathon.
The local dynamo had collapsed with approximately 2½ kilometres to go in the Suriname Marathon after taking on the two Kenyans that eventually finished first and second in the race three weekends ago.
After returning from the Kip Keino High Altitude Training Centre in Kenya this August, Forde had complained about abdominal cramps that caused his discouraging performance at the IAAF 2007 World Championships.
He had stated then that the abdominal problem would affect him over longer distances yet he was keen to compete at the Suriname Marathon where another cramping issue in his right hamstring this time seriously developed.
“I will not be running any marathons for now. I would not go into that at all. I am looking to qualify for the 2012 [London Olympics] so I would have to monitor my competitions,” he explained earlier this week.
Because of those cramps issues, Forde has now decided that he will compete in the range between 1500m and 10 kilometres. He said that the issue could eventually threaten what he hopes will be a long athletics career.
“I’ve recovered [from the cramping problem] to an extent; I’ve found a way to deal with the abdominal cramps but I have not fully recovered from the leg crampI had recovered enough to run in Barbados,” he said.
Asked if he is satisfied with his most recent performance, Forde said that the race was as such that he could not have done better given his circumstances. He said the 31:14 is one of his personal best marks over the distance.
“It [the race] was good; it was just about the race I expected. I am pleased as a sportsman with my performance,” the seasoned athlete said, adding that his lone mistake in the race was probably misjudging the pace after 5000m.
Forde made it known that the Run Barbados event would be his last for this year and that he is anticipating a dominant season next year. High on his 2009 agenda is the Caribbean Games and IAAF World Championships.
