A heated fracas between two prisoners at the Georgetown Prisons has left 25-year-old Randy Joseph, of Buxton, nursing serious stab wounds to the chest.
The other inmate, who was later identified as Derrick Norton, 23, also received stab wounds described as minor injures compared to Joseph’s.
The injured Norton is hospitalised in Ward B2 at the Georgetown Hospital, while Joseph is in the Intensive Care Unit. According to hospital sources, Joseph was stabbed in the left side region of his chest and is suffering from a collapsed lung and internal bleeding. Randy Joseph had being implicated in an armed robbery and was remanded to prison a few weeks ago.
The stabbing war occurred at around 8:00 am yesterday. After the fracas, both inmates were immediately whisked away by prison authorities. According to hospital sources, they both arrived at the hospital at around 8:15 am under tight security.
Joseph’s mother, Hazel Sancho, said that doctors told her that Randy suffered from a stab wound to his lung and he had to undergo immediate surgery. The woman further told this newspaper that she was informed of her son’s condition by a relative.
She said, “I get a call asking if I ain’t hear wat happened to meh son.” Sancho said that the Georgetown Prison authorities later contacted her and asked that she should come to the hospital.
She said that the prison should make sure things like this don’t happen in prisons. The woman told this newspaper that her son has already received four units of blood, and doctors are saying that he still needs more.
Up to press time, the injured man was still in the operating theatre, where doctors were desperately trying to save his life.
Director of Prisons, Dale Erskine, said that they are investigating the matter thoroughly. He added that the “prison authority is trying very hard” to clamp down on prison violence. He explained that he was made aware of the incident early this morning by prison officials.
The director noted that prisoners make weapons out of everything, adding that the security level will be boosted.
He noted that police officers have already taken statements from Norton, but officers were unable to speak to Joseph.
