Michael Browne, of 128 Carmichael Street, South Cummingsburg, was yesterday granted $75,000 bail by acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson on a charge of inflicting grievous bodily harm on Vernon Samuels.
The charge stemmed from an incident on November 3 at Carmichael Street. Brown pleaded not guilty.
According to his lawyer, Ronald Burch-Smith, Samuels is a “habitual drug user” and his client knows nothing about the crime. He said that Browne was already on $5,000 station bail, and he is anxious for the matter to go to trial.
Burch-Smith said that his client poses no flight risk and should be admitted to reasonable bail.
According to police prosecutor Sherwin Matthews, Samuels was dealt several kicks, sustaining fractures about his body.
The prosecutor, however, did not object to bail. Bail was granted, and the accused is expected to make his next court appearance on January 19, 2009.
And also appearing in the same court was Vernon Vyphius, 47, of Number 9 Village, West Coast Berbice. It is alleged that the accused, on December 1, at Potaro River, grievously wounding Terrence Linden with the intent to disfigure. He pleaded not guilty.
Linden was still hospitalized, and, according to his wife, her husband is still in a critical condition at the Georgetown Public Hospital. She added that her husband lost his right eye and sustained severe head injures.
However, the defendant told a different story. He said that Linden owed him money. He added that when his wife saw Linden and asked him for the money, the man “Just disrespect meh wife.”
He further told the court that on the day in question, Linden picked up a bottle and a stone and attacked him, and he only did the natural thing to represent himself. He admitted that it was never his intention to beat him so badly.
He was, nevertheless, remanded to prison and ordered to make his next court appearance on December 22.
Darius Barrington, 19, of Block X, South Sophia, who appeared before the same magistrate yesterday, was remanded to prison. It is alleged that the accused, on December 4, stole one gold chain valued at $30,000 from Shennel Green. He pleaded not guilty.
According to Green, she was walking on the road and she saw the defendant riding a bicycle toward her. No sooner had he reached her than he just snatched her chain.
The woman said that Barrington fell off the bicycle but he picked himself up and continued to run, but was later apprehended by a driver of a car and taken to the police station.
Police prosecutor Sherwin Matthews told the court that this was not a first-time offender, adding that Barrington was recently released from prison.
But the defendant, Barrington, said that he was framed by the police. He further told the court that he was not guilty but would still pay for the chain. He was remanded to prison and is expected to return to court on Tuesday next.
