The new mechanical modernisation plan, which is expected to be completed by next May, is said to be way behind schedule.
This is according to Chief Executive Officer of the Guyana Power and Light Company, Bharat Dindyal, who said that, due to unforeseen circumstances, the project will take longer than was scheduled. He, however, noted that works to start the project are ongoing.
The mechanical modernisation plan will see the eventual closure of the 55-year-old turbine power station located in Kingston.
This is a part of the utility company’s rationalisation exercise, which has a direct bearing on the significant increases in the cost of GPL’s operations.
As part of the rationalisation exercise, more than 90 workers have been separated from the company. The initial plan was for some 250 workers to be separated.
However, this is not likely to happen by year end. According to Dindyal, no more workers will be separated for the remainder of this year.
In January, 43 workers were separated; in March 52, and in April another 36 were separated, after they had all received their full severance packages.
It was expected that, by the end of this year, all 250 workers would have been separated following the completion of the detailed mechanical modernization plan, which was to have been implemented at Kingston.
In an earlier comment, Dindyal had said that the separation of the last batch of workers was eminent as they were then engaged in a thorough assessment of the entire process.
