I hasten to the defence of the editor of this newspaper, Adam Harris, who has been falsely accused of things that are unprintable in this newspaper.
There is now circulating on the World Wide Web a most disparaging statement accusing Adam Harris of something that he did not do, and describing him in the most demeaning of language.
It was one of the nastiest and ugliest pieces ever penned against Adam Harris; it is a sickening and revolting piece of gibberish, better suited for the cesspit than for the Internet on which it has been posted. It has come from Rickford Burke, a man who says that he is the head of a democratic organization.
Even racial epithets such as those recently used by the second in command of Al Qaeda to describe the President-elect of the United States were used against Adam Harris.
What sort of human being can produce such viciousness against someone who has nothing at all to do with the “crime” for which he has been accused?
Adam Harris is being accused of being the author of Blame the Government. He is not the author of that column. I repeat, Uncle Adam is not the author of that column.
That column arose because this newspaper was being accused by many persons of using the Peeping Tom column to attack the Government.
The argument was put that if the Government could be attacked by an anonymous columnist such as Peeping Tom, then the Government’s side ought to be heard through an anonymous source also.
Even though the Peeping Tom column is not an anti-government column, the right to respond was a fair argument, and this newspaper consented to carrying the Blame the Government column in the interest of fairness and balance.
Adam Harris is not the author of Blame the Government. But even if he were, it surely did not necessitate that poisonous and paranoid response which has been posted on the Internet against Uncle Adam.
Why would anyone believe that Adam Harris, who himself has not seen his benefits for sixteen years, would take a position that is in opposition to his own cause?
Why would anyone believe that Adam Harris would do something like this? It is simply not true, and I would urge those who have coined this sickening assault on Adam Harris to do the honourable thing: offer an unqualified apology and go into political exile.
In time to come, I am sure, the Government will make known the facts concerning the payment of benefits paid to past Presidents and their spouses.
When the facts are made public, we will then know for sure just who the victims of misinformation are, and just which ruling administration has been fairer to past Presidents and their spouses.
Whatever the merits of the arguments offered against the views of that Blame the Government column, there can be absolutely no justification for the outrageous assault on the character of one of Guyana’s finest editors and most venerable media practitioners.
This scalding attack on Adam Harris has hurt him, especially since it came from someone that he considers as a friend.
He was almost to the point of doing something which he never contemplated in his many years as a journalist, during which time he faced all manner of criticisms. He was on the point of responding in kind to Burke’s wicked and nasty attack.
This attack on him has affected him deeply, moreso because it is based on an untruth, on rumour and fiction. The offending statement ought to be withdrawn. It is unfit for human consumption.
