GDF 43rd anniversary route march
…a small yet significant test of endurance
On Saturday morning with the rising of the sun, officers and ranks from all the units of the Guyana Defence Force marched out of Base Camp Ayanganna and through the streets of Georgetown, on a six-plus mile Route March. The event formed part of the force’s 43rd anniversary celebrations this year.
Slick in their uniforms, carrying weaponry and bearing the flags of the Force and its various Units, the soldiers were preceded by the GDF Band Corps and led by Lieutenant Colonel George Lewis of First Infantry Battalion.
Chief-of-Staff Commodore Gary Best took the salute as the parade returned to Base Camp Ayanganna.
He told the ranks that the Anniversary March was important since it signals to the Guyanese public that the Force is still here, ready, and able to respond to any calls to deliver its mandate.
He then commended all the officers and ranks on the parade before wishing them a happy 43rd Anniversary.
Route Marches have been a staple in the diet of the Guyana Defence Force ever since its inception on November 1, 1965 and from time to time, its members undertake longer and more grueling marches covering distances like the 26 miles from Timehri to Georgetown while in full battle kit.
These marches are not just a parade of the strength of the Force but they also serve to test the fitness and endurance capacities of its members.
