Dear Editor,
The Guyana Police Force responds to an article published under the Editorial of the Guyana Chronicle of Saturday, November 01, 2008 with the caption “Hooliganism must be vehemently condemned by all.”
The article dealt with the incident at Alexander Village on Diwali Night.
The article stated that: “what is strange is that up to now the police have not issued a statement on the scandalous incident providing an explanation as to why no one has been arrested and charged in connection with the matter, bearing in mind it was a public display of hooliganism”.
The Guyana Police Force wishes to clarify that a statement on the incident was released to the media by the police via the Internet on Wednesday, October 29, 2008; that is, the day after Diwali. This also included the Guyana Chronicle, whose copy was sent to its email address: gcletters@yahoo.com.
This statement on the matter, which included the fact that the police had seized a quantity of squibs and arrested 19 persons who had been sent on cash bail but would be charged, has been publicised in various sections of the media. Ivelaw Whittaker
