In-form Sookdeo (119) spurs GCC into semis
National under-19 left-hander Jeetendra Sookdeo continued his recent Good form with his third century in two weeks to spur GCC to victory against GYO Friday and a place in the semi-finals of the Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) DeSinco Cup 40-overs under-19 cricket competition.
Sookdeo capitalized on three chances to score 119 with 11 fours and two sixes before he was removed by National under-17 selectee off-spinner Ricardo Devers; going for quick runs in the closing stages of his team’s innings. Kumar Ramkissoon hit five fours in 32 while Guyana under-17 selectee Delon Fernandes and Winston Forrester supported Sookdeo with 28 each as GCC reached 303-9 against a GYO team which appeared to lack commitment and unity.
GYO reached 236-9 when their 40 overs expired with the 16-year-old Devers; who batted at number three in the order after Alex Ramalho (29) and Skipper and National under-17 selectee Andre Stoll (18) had blasted 53 for the first wicket, top scoring with 38.
The game began in enterprising fashion as 36 runs were scored in the day’s second over bowled by debutant pacer Jamal Arron who shared the new ball with the left-handed Stoll. GCC raced to 50 in three overs to set up their 300 plus total as they took advantage of lackadaisical fielding and the lack of a genuine effort, especially by the senior players (Ramalho, Stoll and Devers) to fight for their team under pressure.
GYO changed three Wicketkeepers in the GCC innings with Stoll taking the gloves for the last part of the innings. Devers took 3-38 while left-arm spinner John Campayne had 2-61 for GYO as Stoll seemed to have little control over his players.
When GYO replied, Ramalho (who hit five fours and a six in his 29) and Stoll (who hit two fours and a six in his 18) went after the bowlers before Ramalho seemed unfortunate to be given out leg before wicket to left arm spinner Trevor France.
France then also had Stoll leg before and when Devers, who struck seven boundaries in his 38, showed the type of mental indiscipline that is plaguing West Indies cricket and hit a catch back to Sookdeo after hitting the bowler over mid-off for four in the over, the rest of the batting crumbled although Vickram Panday offered some fight with three fours and three sixes in 33.
Ray Ramkissoon took 3-40 while France 2-41 and Sookdeo (2-34) supported for GCC.
