Demerara Life adds life to GRFU
-Teams depart early this morning
Manager in charge of Public Relations for Demerara Mutual Life Assurance Society Ltd Marjorie Chester hands over the cheque to First Vice-President Robin Roberts yesterday.
Demerara Mutual Life Assurance Society Ltd became the latest corporate entity to offer its assistance to the Guyana Rugby Football Union (GRFU) when they presented the sum of $200,000 which will go towards the teams participation at the NAWIRA Sevens Championships in the Bahamas.
Presenting the cheque to First Vice-President of the Union and Manager of the teams Robin Roberts was Manager in charge of Public Relations for the Company Marjorie Chester, who did so in their Boardroom yesterday.
Also at the handing over ceremony were GRFU President Noel Adonis, Manager for Policy Holders Department Orlene Charles, Head Coaches Sherlock Sam (Solomon) and Alton Agard, Technical Director for the teams Canadian Spencer Robinson and female captain Sabola Gray.
Chester in her remarks, spoke of the close partnership that existed between the Company and the GRFU, adding that it was not the first time they’ve given their support, citing a previous act of generosity earlier in the year when Guyana hosted the Women’s 15’s tournament.

The well-expressed Public Relations Manager mentioned some of the other disciplines that had received the Company’s support in the past, naming golf, boxing and hockey as some of those.
“We are currently examining other ways to help promote sports at the community level and to get our young people more interested in the outdoors,” she stated.
Chester added that the benefits of such involvement would be tremendous including improved health, quality of life and the gains communities, towns and the country as a whole can reap.
She urged the business community to make a concerted effort to help raise the level of interest and the quality of sports facilities in communities.
Chester stated that through sports, a country could gain positive recognition and it can also create a better life for the participant.
“We intend to turn our focus on the less popular sports this year and continue to assist the sporting fraternity in the form of corporate sponsorship,” Chester disclosed.
Adonis in his response thanked Dem Life for their support, adding that the GRFU will continue to perform at a high level both in terms of Administration and on-field achievements.
He also recognized the hard work done by Public Relations Consultant to the Union Christopher ‘Kit’ Nascimento, who according to Adonis has been a great asset to them. The two teams were expected to wing out early this morning.
Guyana is the defending NAWIRA Sevens champions and the top two teams will qualify for the World Cup finals in Dubai next year.
