The Guyana Trinidad Mutual Fire & Life Insurance group of Companies (GTM) is tangibly backing the development of sports in the Cinderella County of Essequibo.
Recently, GTM in collaboration with the Queenstown Development Association (QDA) at its Essequibo office, Anna Regina, launched the project which would culminate with a massive day of sports in November.
GTM has pumped One Million Dollars into the project which is aimed at enhancing various sports in the County.
Present at the launch were GTM’s Marketing Manager (Georgetown) Kirk Douglas, Sales Unit Manager Jerome Andrews, Supervisor (Anna Regina) Deochan Mohan, President of the Queenstown Development Association Wendell Walcott and Director of Youth within the Ministry of Culture, Youth & Sport Carl Brandon.
Andrews, in his remarks declared the sports project is historical. He said that the company is pleased to be partnering with the QDA while the Island of Wakenaam also stands to benefit from the project.
Brandon, who commended the effort by GTM and the QDA called on more business entities to support activities similar in nature which contributes to the positive development of young people and by extension, the society.
The players, captains and residents of region all expressed their gratitude to GTM and the QDA for initiating such a project which will be of benefit to all. Meanwhile, Football, Volleyball, Table Tennis, Dominos and Softball Cricket will all be contested.
Football kicked off on Sunday with a group A match that saw Queenstown hammering Henrietta 3-1 at the Queenstown Community Centre ground.
The other group A team is Danielstown while the group B teams are Supenaam, New Opportunity Corp (NOC) and Suddie.
Action will continue on Sunday at the NOC ground where the host will entertain Supenaam from 16:00hrs. The respective group winners will face off in the final.
