Wajeed Hanson, 33, of Foulis, East Coast Demerara, was yesterday placed on $75,000 bail when he appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
It is alleged that Hanson, on October 2 last, stole 25 bags of white rice, valued at $155,000, from Avway Enterprise Rice Company. The man pleaded not guilty to the charge. He was represented by attorney-at-law Vic Puran, who in a bail application said that it was “highly impossible” for his client to steal 25 bags of rice.
The lawyer said that rice is stored at the wharf, where the security presence is high, and if indeed his client had stolen the rice, the security would have caught him.
He further told the court that his client bought the rice from an agent within the company, and the agent did not give the company its money.
The lawyer asked that his client be placed on self bail.
Bail was then set at $75,000. Hanson is expected to make his next court appearance on November 27.
