Firefighters from Georgetown and the GuySuCo East Demerara estates last night battled a raging bush fire which threatened several buildings at the Coldingen Industrial Site.
Although the fire razed several acres of grass, it failed to ignite unused buildings, including an abandoned generating house.
The fire, which started at about 19:00 hours, raged for more than three hours before it was contained.
At first it appeared as if the firefighters had gained control but aided by a strong Atlantic breeze, the fire quickly ploughed through thick grass and shrubs. To compound the firefighting efforts, a mechanical problem stalled the operations.
As the fire raged, several staff members of the Guyana Elections Commission, which has a building in the compound, made their way to the scene, among them Chief Registrations Officer, Gocool Boodoo who lamented the lack of proper coordination by the fire fighters.
“We have a full complement of staff at the ready to move vehicles and other things from the offices,” Boodoo told this newspaper in the midst of the blaze. In the end the fire was brought under control, much to everyone’s relief.
