The foundation of everything?

DEAR EDITOR,
Here we go again. Paul Kokoski, who often sprouts Christian idioms in newspaper letter columns, says: “Only the Word of God is the foundation of all reality, stable like heaven. Therefore we must change our concept of reality.” (Guyana Chronicle Oct 9th).

Kokoski simplistically dismisses the importance in life of “success, career and money” explaining that these are things that will “pass away”.

These are realities, he believes, that are built on sand rather than a rock. He probably forgot to mention personal upliftment and ambition in his list of useless social values.

For normal people, however, success, career and money are tools that improve the conditions of their lives.
Very often they see it as blessings from God, and usually it becomes a gift that is shared with others and handed down to children and grandchildren.

But I will try to alter my reality to suit Kokoski’s advice, to use the word of his God as “the foundation of everything”.

I will believe in a talking serpent, I will believe in astrology and my daily horoscope because God placed the sun, moon and stars in a place Kokoski calls a “stable heaven” to be used as signs.

All animals were originally plant eaters; tapeworms, vampire bats, mosquitoes, and barracudas – all were strict vegetarians.

I will believe in a kind of biology which teaches that by having goats copulate while looking at streaked rods they will produce streaked baby goats.

In my changed reality using Kokoski’s methods, I now learn that leprosy can be cured if I get two birds. Kill one. Dip the live bird in the blood of the dead one.

Sprinkle the blood on the leper seven times, and then let the blood-soaked bird fly off. Next I will find a lamb and kill it.

Wipe some of its blood on the patient’s right ear, thumb, and big toe. Sprinkle seven times with oil and wipe some of the oil on his right ear, thumb and big toe.

I will repeat that and finally I’ll kill a couple doves and offer one for a sin offering and the other for a burnt offering.

And I will never again doubt that unicorns and dragons exist because on checking the “Word” I find that dragons worship God.

I now know that the earth is set on “foundations” and it does not move, rather the sun moves around the earth which is flat and has four corners.

I know also that God has snow and hail all stored up to use later “in times of trouble.” Epilepsy, I’ve learned, is not an illness but rather is caused by devils.

Meanwhile, I will ignore anyone who tells me that the “Word” is better suited for moral and spiritual guidance.

I will ridicule anyone who says that the “Word” is not absolute but rather an inspiration to goodness for all people; that the Word is not meant to condemn “success, career and money” as unreal, but rather is a guide on how to conduct oneself in the real world of success, career and money. I will continue to indulge Paul Kokoski’s fundamentalist and absolutist reality.

I agree with him that this new “stability” is “in fact the foundation of everything” and I refuse absolutely to go to Canje with those guys in the white lab coats; they think this new reality is better suited for the BMH!
