No matter the age, a man is guilty of statutory rape once the girl is under the age of 16. On Wednesday last, a 17-year-old of Danielstown Village, Essequibo Coast was taken into police custody, accused of carnally knowing a girl under the age of fifteen.
He had appeared at the Anna Regina Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Faith McGusty on his first appearance, and was placed on $30,000 bail, which has since been escheated.
Between January and December, 2007, the accused visited the minor at her stepfather’s home in Danielstown. According to the Police, the act was committed while the minor was alone at home.
The minor’s elder sister reported the matter to the Bartica Police Station, where the victim now resides with her father. The accused is said to be the nephew of the minor’s stepfather. He will return to court on October 8.
